What the hell ?

This seems to be the first question people ask when they hear about Burning Man. It is also the first question they ask upon arriving at Burning Man, the most-often asked question while at the event, the last question they ask upon departing, and the question they continue to ask for months afterward.

As we pulled into the Burning Man entrance line at 1:30 am on Saturday before the event, I found myself asking this question yet again.
